The Police Cadet program is a trainee program designed for career development into the law enforcement field as a Police Officer. The Police Cadet is under immediate to general supervision, and performs non-hazardous duties throughout the Police Department.

Essential functions include:

  • General parking enforcement and issuance of parking citations
  • Performing traffic control
  • Preparing reports for impounding of vehicles
  • Investigating and writing a selected variety of crime and traffic collision reports when no suspect is present
  • Collecting and preserving evidence
  • Appearing and testifying in court
  • Providing information and assistance to the public at the front counter
  • Answering telephone requests for police services
  • Collecting monies for public requests of documents
  • Performing clerical assignments and support for department personnel
  • Processing reports and maintaining records and files
  • Preparing misdemeanor cases for filing with the District Attorney
  • Serving subpoenas
  • Fingerprinting
  • Performing routine jail functions such as custodial checks on inmates, searches, booking, fingerprinting, and other necessary jail duties
  • Performing crossing guard duties
  • Conducting tours of city facilities
  • Maintaining police vehicles
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Police Cadets must be 18-23 years of age and must currently be enrolled college or in their last year of high school with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and maintain it while employed to be eligible for the program.
